ZORBA THE GREEK (17 NOVEMBER 1968, IMPERIAL, 305 PERFORMANCES). Music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, book by Joseph Stein, production staged and presented by Harold Prince. Based on the novel Zorb the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis and following a popular film starring Anthony Quinn, this musical included winning performances by Herschel Bernardi and other members of the cast. Ebb, Kander, and Prince had previously worked together on Cabaret, as had Stein and Prince on Fiddler on the Roof. Zorba was not the equal of those shows, but it was a good musical play with laudable points. In the title role, Bernardi played a Greek who lives life like he might die at any moment, all intuition and acting on instantaneous desires. He teaches Nikos (John Cunningham) his philosophy, helping this far more deliberate man through some very tough times, including his girlfriend murder. The stage action included a singer in black leading two musicians playing bouzoukis and an authentic Greek chorus.
