ShipmanSheraton Caverns. Dive site, Pop, Kaua. One of the most popular dive sites on Kaua. A 30- to 60-foot site with three large parallel lava tubes 80�20 feet long offshore that are the island most popular cave dives. The dive site is off the Sheraton Kaua Resort, which opened in 1968 and was Kaua first resort managed by a national chain. Severely damaged by Hurricane niki in 1992, the resort reopened in 1997. During the late 1950s, Robin Hood, starring Richard Greene, was a popular television series in Hawai. At the same time a gang of thieves used the ironwood forest that is now part of the beach park to strip cars and to fence stolen property. The gang was compared to Robin Hood and his Merry Men in England, and the ironwood forest was named Sherwood Forest. The forest is now part of Waimnalo Bay Beach Park. The surf site is a shorebreak on the sandbar fronting the park and is also known as Sherwoods. Sherwoods. Surf site, Waimnalo, Ohu. Same as Sherwood Forest. Shinmachi Tsunami Memorial. Monument, Hilo, Hawai. Monument erected in Wailoa State Recreation Area on the shore of Hilo Bay in memory of those who have died during tsunami, especially the tsunami of April 1, 1946 and May 23, 1960. Shipman. Beach, Keau, Hawai. Small pocket of detrital and calcareous sand at the head of an inlet in an otherwise rocky shore. The Shipman Estate is inland of the beach. William H. Shipman (1854�943) purchased the property in the late 1800s and made his home here. His heirs own the land. Also known as Keau Beach. Shipwreck. 1. Beach, surf site, windsurf site, Pop, Kaua. The shipwreck that gave the beach its name was an unidentified wooden boat that lay on the sand at the water edge for many years. Hurricane wa in 1982 destroyed what little of the wooden structure remained but left its heavy, rusted engine. The engine is buried in the sand, where it is occasionally exposed when high surf erodes the beach. The shorebreak is one of Kaua most popular bodysurfing and bodyboarding sites.
