Space was actually a real-deal art gallery whose owners, in a momentary lapse of reason, agreed to let rowdy punk bands like Born Against play among the rows of paintings and blackand-white photographs that regularly lined the walls. Though you can probably imagine how that turned out, for a while D.C. Space was every bit as beloved as the old 9:30 Club, primarily because it was smaller and located a few blocks away. What that meant for the local scene at the time was that, on any given night, you could see two bands at the same time. This was, apparently, a really big deal to people who lived in D.C. After all, how many people can say they were able to see Fugazi and Circus Lupus* play on the same day in 1993? I guessing not many. In addition to proximity, D.C. Space was also known for some pretty raucous performances. When you walked into the club, you never knew if you were going to end up on camera (like for Minor Threat DC Space/Buff Hall/9:30 Club DVD) or end up getting puked on (as was the case with 9353 vocalist Bruce Merkle and a couple of unfortunate concertgoers). Luckily, not knowing what to expect was half the fun. Incidentally, D.C. Space was gutted a few years ago and turned into a Starbucks�just what the world needs more of.WISH YOU WERE HERE* Hell, I don know who Circus Lupus is, either, but being able to brag about seeing two shows in one night is pretty impressiveegardless of who the bands are.
