Athens267merous traces of antiquity, all in a terrible state of preservation and of uncertain identity. The river itself was lined with sanctuaries and offered a cool retreat from the city, to judge from Plato description of a visit by Sokrates and Phaidros (Phaidros 229�30). Across the river was the marble stadium built by Herodes Atticus in the second century a.d. (see fig. 209), as well as the little fifth-century b.c. Ionic temple assigned to Artemis Agrotera (see fig. 97). Farther downstream were the old Peisistratid fountain house, the Enneakrounos, and the gymnasium of Kynosarges.
